I wanted to wait until after law school to get a new car, but my current one feels likes its on the edge of a nervous breakdown.
It's still under 100K and the trade-in value is still somewhat strong. Of course, I don't want a car payment while I'm in law school but I think I could swing it if it were around $200/month or so.
I found this nifty auto loan calculator that helps me figure out what I can afford to keep my payments that low.
I'm thinking of getting a certified/pre-owned volkswagen (yes, another goddamn VW!) but I'm open too, since it will be a temporary thing until I'm working and can afford a higher car payment.

I've too have owned many a VW and actually really miss them. We road in my old Jetta last night (sold it to friends) to see Jack Johnson at the Gorge! I still wish I had those indigo dash lights staring back at me but don't miss dealing with two kids in car seats in the back.
ooooh, fun! would you get another bug or a jetta, or a passat or something else?
feel free, as usual, to utilize any of Josh's absurd car-haggling know-how. I'm sure he'd be glad to be of assistance. He's been saying that there are a ton of desperate dealerships out there and that it's possible in some cases to get a new car for about the same payments/overall cost as a used one if cards are played right. I, of course, have no idea how to play said cards, but Mr. Cool-as-a-cucumber has some good pointers and in fact helped his bro get a brand new truck for a song.
I will miss the wee green, though. oh well, onward and upward! new cars are fun.
I was thinking of the Joosh's "Jedi Mind shit" as a resource I might want to tap into...
I think I might have it looked at once more - it could be a transmission issue except that the car only acts weird when the a/c is on. A lot of cars get taxed in the AZ heat, but the way it's acting reminded some people I talked to about a transmission problem. Thing is, the car runs fine when I don't have the a/c on.
If I can just eek out a couple more years that would be ideal... but if not, I'm open to different car options...
I found a Golf at one dealership that is really cute and under $14K... I could also lease if I know I want to upgrade in a few years anyway (I had an idea to lease a Prius for 2-3 years then buy one at the end of the lease with the new battery).
I'm open to non-VW and non-Prius cars but the sea of options is so vast it feels overwhelming.
I think a hummer would be cute. Or an F350 turbo disel p/u truck. You just never know when you will need to use that shit. So it is good to have.
I think if you drove up in your hummer to school you would get mad respect.
Just a thought..keep that in mind when you go out looking for a car. Don't get roped into an efficient fuel economy car, that's soo 2007.
Le me know your decision
