Updates

Life has been hectic... but fun!

I went to Portland this last weekend to visit some peeps. X-Files disappointed me, but The Dark Knight was amazing and emotionally taxing. I loved it!

I had a great time in P-town... got to drink several lovely drinks here, here, and here, plus a visit to the Farmer's Market and the Saturday Market.

Work has been going well. I've been trying to figure out how to summarize the experience without revealing where I work (it's best to keep some modicum of anonymity at this point). Working in a large law firm is great: the pay is good, the perks are awesome and the work is amazing. But even as a summer associate they work you. And with the social events they organize, you always have to be "on." It's more tiring than I expected but I'm not complaining, because that seems ridiculous. It's just that I think I need a vacation from my summer vacation, if you know what I mean?

I'm looking forward to being home this weekend and sleeping in... only one more week of work, then a trip to the VTA before school starts again! God, I'm not ready to be a student again. UGH

I want to believe...

...the X-Files sequel will be good. How could it be bad? I get to see it with some of my closest friends and fellow X-Philes! I can't freakin' wait to get up to PDX!

I saw this article about Scully and thought I'd send it along. Here's a little snippet, but the whole thing is good:

This weekend, she'll be bringing all those chops back to the role that made her, and that's good news. In an entertainment world where women are disappearing from multiplexes, where men bulk up as superheroes while women don't eat but sip pink drinks, we need to remember that there was once a very short heroine who hunted monsters and talked about Einstein, who kicked ass and questioned her faith, who went to work with a man she loved but didn't rip his shirt off over lunch, who didn't want to believe, but opened herself nonetheless to possibility. We need Scully back, even for a moment.

Chivalry

People are very polite in Arizona.

Any day I share an elevator with a man (of any age), he always waits for me to enter or exit first. Also, men will always hold the door for you - women, too, but not as often.

I'm sure there are women who are offended by a man holding the door for them, but not me. I loves me some chivalry. I can still feel empowered and get a little help every now and then.

One of the summer associates at my firm is very young but extremely polite. On our retreat last weekend he helped another associate with her luggage. She was traveling with her young son and had her hands full. He took her bags, loaded them in the overhead storage bin, etc. He ANTICIPATED that she needed this assistance, and he's like 23 or something.

Thank you, sweet TV gods

The sun is truly shining down on me this week... Not only did the birthday celebrations carry on until Monday, but new seasons of Project Runway and Big Brother started this week! And yes, I'm watching Big Brother, all three episodes a week. SBJ.

In more TV news...

Here's a new trailer for Heroes:

And some sweet love from Jon Stewart - god I loves me some JS:

Random comments

This birthday weekend has been the birthday weekend that keeps on giving. I'm sorry I missed several phone calls from friends - you will be happy to know that I was indeed having a great birthday weekend.

Today was excellent: I watched a few episodes of the Project Runway marathon on Bravo before heading over to a friend's house for a lovely lunch that extended into the evening, due to the consumption of several margaritas and watching Death Proof on their kick-ass television. Nothing says happy birthday like raunchy television, I say!

This is totally random but I remembered this skit over the weekend and thought I should share... enjoy!

In happier news...

More X-Files press!

An article about Chris Carter and the upcoming film.

And a link to a little photo gallery.

I might break down and buy an iPhone

My birthday's this weekend (woo hoo!) and the 'Rents gave me a gift certificate to the Apple Store after hearing me go on and on, ad nauseum, about the beautious wonder that is the iPhone.

On my flight to Vegas a couple weeks ago I quizzed the guy next to me about his. How's the reception? Can you hear OK when speaking to someone? Do you pay a lot each month? What about the battery? All the answers were positive and he had no complaints.

Early reviews of the new iPhone are mixed, and I have to figure out if it's worth breaking my Verizon contract (god only knows what that entails), but goddam do I want one!

Btw, the birthday celebrations started yesterday... another gal I work with has a birthday this weekend so we went out for drinks and dinner after work.

Sadly, I got a migraine right in the middle of it so I had to leave early. I did take my meal to go and will be enjoying it later today (seared beef and blue cheese on butter lettuce with carmelized onions and pancetta - holy crap, so good).

Tonight I'm heading to Caffe Boa with some friends with an after-party of wine and movies at one of their houses. Yay! It will be great.

Sunday (my actual birthday) may entail more movie watching, either in the theater or at another friend's house. She just got new couches and has a huge, kick-ass television I've been dying to watch Death Proof on.

Then more celebrating with co-workers on Monday! We are going out to lunch and then drinks after work. The life of riley, truly.

PS: I think the migraine was brought on by:
hormones (that time of the month! Lovely.)
stress (I don't know if I'm on law journal yet, and I'm trying to do a extra-special good job at work this week and next)
too much caffeine (coffee and diet cokes all day, and no water: is that bad?)
fatigue (5-6 hours of sleep per night is not legit)

Watch while you can...

I'm sure C-Span will want to pull this down. It's a little old but so good.

Hanging with Sami

My sister's been visiting me this week and we've been having a lot of fun. I was worried she would be bored during the day (since I had to work) but being the social butterfly she is she was invited out to a Diamondbacks game with some local firemen yesterday... leave it to my sister to visit my new town and meet a bunch of hot guys immediately.

We've been having some yummy dinners though. The first night we went to the adorable Cibo. Cibo is perfect for a cozy, casual, yummy meal.

Last night we went to the hip but not pretentious Cheuvront Wine & Cheese Bar. Every morsel was absolutely divine. I had two pomegranate margaritas, a lovely seared beef and blue cheese salad and we split this chocolate chip cookie tart filled with chocolate ganache, topped with vanilla gelato. Holy shit, it was amazing.

Today we're heading to Flagstaff for a few days! It will be nice to get out of the heat!
