A couple more...

During our visit to LACMA, we ventured around the museum to other exhibits on display. We came across a collection of Spanish colonial art - I nearly died when I saw this beautiful box:

I don't think I've ever lusted after a piece of art before!

Some recent pics!

Bextravagant goes global

Once in a while I get visitors from around the world, and my theory is that they are anonymous zombie-bots scouring the web...

But yesterday I got a slew of visits from Japan, after my post about Leo was mentioned on a Japanese LDC fan site!

This has happened before... the moment you post the name of a celebrity in your blog, the fans come-a-calling. Nice!

Incredible

Thanks to Teabagger for the link!

Watch the whole thing... it's worth it.

Surrealism, L.A. style

While I'm back in CA for a few days (heading back to AZ later this week!) I'm trying to fit in as much as possible...

Yesterday my sister and I headed to LACMA to see the exhibition Dali: Painting and Film. It was a great show... his most famous painting, The Persistence of Memory, even made an appearance:

The show was a mix of film and paintings - throughout the exhibit films made by or about Dali were being screened. They also showed some clips from Spellbound, a Hitchcock film that included dream sequences created by Dali.

As my sister and I roamed through the exhibit, we came across Melancholy, and as we tried to get a better look (there were quite a few people huddling around the painting), my sister noticed that one of the people checking out the painting was an actor... she thought he was Henry Thomas, but he was actually Lukas Haas.

As she and I tried to get a better look at him, leaning forward toward him, guess who we realized was standing directly in front of us? Leonardo DiCaprio! Holy crap! He turns around, kind of looks at me and Sami with our mouths agape, and then quickly makes an exit.

Two things surprised me about him: 1) He is tall - at least taller than I expected him to be. I think he's somewhere between 5' 10" or 6'; and 2) he's hot - the scruff, the baseball cap - yeah, he's hot. Way hotter in person than in photos and whatnot.

Yay L.A.!

Lurking downtown

Last night we checked out first thursday in downtown Portland, where the galleries (both upscale and low-scale) opened their doors to visitors. There was some good stuff - one gallery had some works by Picasso and Dali for sale - and others were more local artist-focused.

As we wandered, we got pretty chilly so we decided to stop into Stumptown Coffee at Ace Hotel. Arguably the best coffee in Portland, each cuppa is brewed to order. De-lish. We hung out in the lobby of Ace, wondering if we were cool enough. There was a couple who had to be in high school, but who knows anymore. All I can tell you is that the guy looked like David Hemmings from Blow Up, and he had on tight white jeans. How did the 80s come back with such a vengeance?

After becoming sufficiently caffeinated, we decided we needed some booze. We strolled down to Ringlers Annex. I loved this place! They have a downstairs cellar where you can booze it up all nice and cozy.

Ahh, Portland...

Happy 2008!

I'm here in Portland (pictures forthcoming) and having a great time with Amby, Josh and the Watsons!

We've been taking it incredibly easy (my favorite thing), venturing out into the cold to grub on the deliciousness around the city. My first night in town we had an amazing sushi dinner. The next day out at breakfast it started to snow! Lovely.

On New Year's we had a yummy dinner at Stickers and then headed to The Blue Monk for more drinks... only to realize by 11:15 we were ready to had back home and watch 30 Rock. We may have started a tradition... now I can't imagine ringing in the new year without Jack Donaghy.

New Year's Day was lovely and chill. We strolled around downtown, grabbing some coffee from Peet's, a delicious thai lunch, then checked out Powell's. I picked up one book, resisting the urge to buy three - at least until we shop there again later this week. I love Powell's - it's impossible for me to resist all its temptations. It's like a crack house for bibliophiles.
