Oakland meltdown!

Just read an article about an oil tanker fire on the MacArthur Maze that collapsed a section of the freeway, the section I used to use when I drove from Peachpit to Alameda!

I just sent this to you by e-mail. I should have known that you already had the inside scoop! Holy crap though, wow. The photo you posted is amazing. It looks like a Dali painting plopped in the middle of an urban landscape. The one on CNN looked just like the aftermath of the 89 earthquake.

Yeah, Ramon's commute is officially hosed for a while (hello, ferry). That West Grand exit is going to see more cars in the upcoming couple of months than it ever has. I wonder if any quick-thinking entrepreneurs will sell coffee or something down there, as it is now it's a total industrial wasteland. The best bet would be to open a gas station down there for all of the poor folks who are stuck in the detour for eons. Ugh. What a nightmare.

The comparison to Dali is right on! This is so bizarre, and I feel sorry for commuters... thank god Ramon can take the ferry and his work helps him with commuting costs, is that right? Hope so.

I was trying to figure out: how do you get from Peachpit to Alameda now? Do you need to go to West Oakland, then take side streets back to 980? Suckage!

This link has the best map I've seen yet to make me understand exactly where the collapse is. For some reason I had a hard time wrapping my brain around the exact location.

Anyhoo, the commute from PP would be fine (but muy congested). You just take 580 to 980 to 880. That was how I went anyway because I hated 5th street and preferred to take the Jackson Street exit. The only problem would be that everyone else will be doing the same thing so it will be massively congested. This evening's commute will be interesting.

So crazy... the same route you had to take when I moved there in 1996 due to the earthquake! Traffic is going to be awful...!
(PS: I couldn't get that link to work!)
